Snails that are dislodged from their 'perch' often float upside down on the surface until they find something to anchor themselves on. If there is something covering the opening of the shell your snail is fine. If the opening of the shell is gaping, the snail is dead. Remove it before it rots the water.
A Healthy snail doesn't flip upside down to sleep usually. so A unhealthy snail would sleep upside down.

I can think only of Saint Peter who was crucified upside down and sometimes pictured as such. He was ordered to be crucified but requested that they execute him upside down as he did not feel worthy to die as Christ had.
