YES! It depends upon the car. Most typical vehicles don't improve mileage when running a higher octane gas. They don't have enough compression to justify the higher octane. Even in the rare cases a car does get better mileage than it might on lower octane, the improvement doesn't justify the cost. Some performance cars benefit from higher octane fuels. The realized benefit isn't better mileage; it's better power. For lots of great information, read the original Gasoline FAQ: http://www.faqs.org/faqs/autos/gasoline-faq/ It will neither increase your mileage nor your power. High-octane fuel is simply a cleaner version of the hydrocrabons used in regular unleaded fuel. It cuts down on the knocking because it is more resistant to self-ingnition. And knocking as many unfortunate people have found out, damages your engine. However, not all cars are able to handle high-octane fuels. Typically, cars made before 1986 are not equipped to run on high-octane fuel. Owners should check with their local dealer or manufacturer before using high-octane, or premium fuel, in their cars made before 1986. For most cars the answer is NO. Higher octane fuels burn slower so unless you can increase your initial advance you will not see any difference. Also when a vehicle is tuned to use lower octane fuel a higher octane will create carbon deposits and over time will cause engine ware, overheating, and poorer fuel economy. Todays igitions are computer controled many are distributorless so we shade tree mechanics can't mess with them. Many of todays vehicles recommend 91 octane but can use 89 or 87 if you don't hot rod them or over load them, more than two people. No, just the opposite. Lower octane fuels, say 87 pctane, have more hydrocarbons than higher octane fuels, say 91 octane, because the higher octane fuels have had non-hydrocarbon additives put in that reduce the capability to have the highest "burn" otherwise possible. The higher octanes are for cars with high compression engines and they are there to prevent knocking, which can damage the engine. What octane does a 1995 Toyota 4Runner need?

A 3vze engine will take anywhere from regular 87 octane, up to 100 octane race gas. However what is your purpose to using higher or lower octane, Using regular, plus, or premium will work well. however higher mile engines would prefer 91 octane!

What is the lowest octane to use in an AD wagon?

87 octane regular is recommended. Using a higher octane is a total waste of money and will provide no benefits whatsoever.

If gasoline description is Super Plus then what does the Plus mean?

It means the gasoline blend has a higher Octane. Use the octane that the manufacture recommends for your car. If you are already using the proper octane fuel, you will not obtain more power from higher octane fuels. The engine will be already operating at optimum settings, and a higher octane will have no effect on the management system. Your driveability and fuel economy will remain the same. The higher octane fuel costs more, so you are just throwing money away.

What causes pinging in a 2011 polaris 550 ATV?

Try using a higher octane gasoline in this ATV. Many times the pinging is due to not using a 91 or higher octane fuel. A lower fuel like 85 or 87 may not be burning off as efficiently as the 91 octane which in turn will cause the pinging.

Using an octane rated higher than your vehicle?

Use the lowest octane that does not 'ping' (detonation). The higher octane is not only more expensive, it can, in some cases, cost you performance. Its got to do with things like the latent heat of vaporization and other scientific formulas.

What type of gas is best for 2001 corvette?

Using a higher octane than is recommended by Chevrolet, is not only a waste of money, but may actually harm your engine. No additional Power or MPG will result from using a higher octane fuel. That is a myth. Conversely using a lower octane will also harm you engine. So use Exactly what is listed in the owners manual.

What octane is recommended for a 1989 Honda accord?

87 Octane Regular. Using any higher octane is a total waste of money and will provide no benefit whatsoever. In fact it may cause hard starting. Use only 87 Octane.

If a car has been given a certain type of gas for a long time would it hurt to start giving it different type of gas?

It would only hurt if the car required 89 octane or 92 octane and you went to a lesser octane. Those cars are engineered to run on a higher octane. A car engineered for the lower 87 octane might actually see some performance improvement by going to a higher octane once or twice, because the higher octane will help to clean the injectors a "little". Not much though. Over all there is no real significance to using the higher octane. The higher the octane level, the "richer" or "heavier" the fuel is. So if the car is not manufactured for the higher octane, you will eventually cause carbon build up at a faster rate than normal.

Do you have to use 91 octane gas in a 1996 Cadillac Deville?

Use exactly what your owner's manual states. If it says 89 or 91 octane then do not use 87 octane. Using a lower octane that required may cause pre-detonation or what is commonly called (Pinging). Pinging may be harmful and may cause engine damage. Bottom line is to use no lower or higher octane fuel that the engine was designed to run on. Using a lower octane can cause engine damage, and using a higher octane is a waste of money that will provide not benefits whatsoever, and is nothing more than a myth.

Do you need to use 92 octane gasoline in a 2010 Lexus RX350?

Yes. Using a lower grade of fuel then is recommended will reduce your mileage, performance, and increase your emissions. You can always use a higher grade as well.
