Can varicose veins rupture

Yes they can... and it happened to me. I am a 40 year old mother of 3 and I inherited varicose veins from my mom.

I was on a 3 hour non-stop flight. I didn't walk around at all. The next day I was visiting with family with my legs crossed (big no no) then I felt a burning, itching sensation on the right side of my leg just below my kneecap.

It was one of my varicose veins...about an inch wide and was bulging. You could tell that it was whole and then it fanned out when it ruptured.

Within seconds I took some aspirin as a precaution and put my leg up because I thought it was a blod clot.

After it settled down I went to urgent care and they did my vitals, examination of the leg and they ordered an ultra-sound of my leg.

20 minutes later in the imaging room they put the gel on and checked my whole femoral artery that runs down from your crotch to the place of the rupture. They need to see if there are any blockages/clots. There were none. Just a rupture.

The following days I just took it easy....took some ibuprofen and went on short walks.

5 days later I have no leg pain in that area....just a nasty bruise.

Whenever I fly they just recommend that I have a few aspirin before the flight and that I get up and walk to the bathroom at least once.

I have regular blood pressure...pretty healthy....but we had just moved in the previous month and went on 2 trips and then I flew...so I think I had some anxiety with it and did too much. My body needed rest and I didn't listen to it.

When I returned I had a full physical including bloodwork & urine samples.

Everything is good....Thank you GOD.

Yes they can, I had one do it yesterday, I had a hard time getting mine to stop bleeding. It was shooting blood out of my leg and was all over the place. I went to ER they finally got mine to stop bleeding and fused it back together, no that didn't hurt the fusing. It scared me to death. They took me right in. I tried putting pressure but it just still came out. But then again I was standing. So if yours does this try to sit down or lay down and elevate leg and put pressure on the vein. After wards don't sit, stand very long that way. But they do want you to walk little slow the blood still flows (after it stops bleeding) and don't take any medicines for pain cause it can thin the blood.
