Will your homeowner's insurance go up if you buy a pit bull? |
[Edit] |
Answer
Most insurance companies will ask, but never actually check.
Nationwide will insure pitbulls if they have passed the Canine Good Citizen program.
Answer
We were asked the breeds of our dogs when we signed up with our homeowners insurance. Specifically they asked if we had pitbulls. Although we have one that is part pitbull, we picked the kinder part-lab. Don't know if it helped any. They never came out to see if we were lying or not. A Poodle can be just as mean under certain circumstances.
Answer
The question should not be - will it go up? The question should be, will they insure you AT ALL any more!
I own a pitbull and currently am in the process of buying a house. Of course before buying the house, I have to have the insurance paid up for a year. I have been with American Family insurance for everything since I was 16. The minute they found out I owned a pitbull they said they would not insure me, AT ALL.
I personally think that is crap. Pitbulls are not bad dogs if you raise them right. Any good pet owner knows that it matters how you raise a dog. I could buy a weiner dog and raise it wrong, and it would be just as mean as a pitbull could be!
From an insurance companies point of view, it could be a pretty big liability to them and that is understandable, BUT I think they should at least do some sort of checking into it, like weather the dog has bitten anyone in the past or things like that, instead of just dropping it like a hot brick!
If anyone knows of a decent insurance company, that is not too afraid to insure someone with a pitbull, please email me, Mcarey@neb.rr.com. I'll be needing it way too soon.
