NASA's twin robot geologists, the Mars Exploration Rovers, launched toward Mars on June 10 and July 7, 2003, to find answers to the questions about water on Mars. They landed on Mars January 3 and January 24 PST, 2004.

The Mars Rover was not discovered it was invented.
the question doesn't make sense NEW 8/14/2012 (PurpleMouse): I think the ask-er is trying to say, "how long did it take the spaceship to land on mars?" It took a year for a rover to land, so maybe less for a spaceship.
The Mars Pathfinder Lander was launched from the Kennedy Space Center on the 4th of December 1996. After a 7 month voyage, it landed in a region called Chryse planitia on the 4th of July 1997 (Independence day!). Inside the lander was the rover Sojourner, which took 550 images (the lander took 16 500) before transmissions was lost on the 27th of September 1997.
The Spirit rover did not break down yet. Contact was lost shortly after it landed five years ago, but that was due to an error in the programming that NASA managed to fix.

There's no specific time limit for how long a rover can last on Mars. Accidents and mechanical failure can affect the ability of a rover to survive. The Opportunity rover has so far been working almost non-stop for seven years. Its twin rover Spirit has not been heard from in almost a year and may no longer be functional.
