The Largest snake ever recorded is a 49-foot, 900 pound reticulated python that is currently in captivity in Java, Indonesia.

This, along with most records of outsized snakes, is a complete hoax. Although this specimen is large, it is closer to 24 feet. A reward of one million dollars by the Smithsonian Museum for a snake over 30 feet long has never been claimed, and has been offered since the 60's.

The world longest snake is the Reticulated python, which has been known to grow consistently over 20 feet long if left alone to grow. The Guiness Book of Records lists the longest Reticulated Python ever officially measured to be 32 feet, 9 1/2" long.

The second longest snake in the world on a consistent basis would be the Green Anaconda in South America, which also can grow over 20' and on average is a heavier bodied snake, being overall the Largest snake in the world by mass.

Reports of longer snakes, such as the 49 foot snake found in Indonesia that you can find all over the web, have never been confirmed and usually turn out to be hoaxes. See the photo in the related links.

It was a hoax. When people actually measured it, it turned out to be only 21-23 feet long. The 48 foot measurement was not remotely possible and it was dumb for news agencies to report it - that's like believing there's an 11 foot tall person.
