This needs to be determined by you and your husband. Are you willing to have another child with the possibly of autism again? Can you treat both children fairly, even if one was autistic and the other wasn't? Do you have the time and energy to devote to two children, one being autistic? If you want to two children, then you should have two. But you just need to make sure that you ask yourself these questions and make sure that you and your husband can agree with each others answers. Your childrens lives are more important and it is also extremely important that you can equally provide for all your children and that all your children are treated fairly. You also need to make sure that even though your first child may be autistic, that your second child is not neglected because of the extra attention needed to provide for your first-born.

Autism is not a bad thing, the idea that somehow having an Autistic child is bad enough to prevent you having another in order to prevent you 'risking' another Autistic child is ableist. I have an Autistic step-child and a neurotypical step-child, with both my partner and myself being Autistic it is highly likely our child will be Autistic and we have no problem with that - there's nothing wrong with Autistic children.

Switch Doctors! Autism is not diagnosable until at least after age 1. There is currently no genetic test or anyway to determine if a baby has autism during pregnancy. If the siblings have it you do have an increased risk but other than that you can't tell until later in early childhood. Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder and the criteria for diagnosis can be found in the DSM-IV Diagnostic and Statistics Manuel for Mental Health. Diagnosis can only be made by a medical doctor (try to find one specialized in psychiatry) a psychologist or a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I have my master in counseling and am working on my license. I have worked with children with autism for over 10 years.
