You should ask a local attorney for specifics about your incident. However you are generally allowed to defend any person in any place as long as your actions are reasonable. It would not be reasonable to shoot someone because they slapped your brother, it would probably be reasonable to knock down a 30 year old man punching your six year old brother. As always, once a physical attack stops, so should the physical defense.
