Check to see if your fuel pump is good. Buy starting fuild and spary some in the hose that's attached to your air fliter spary it towards the engine. Have someone turn the key while you spray and see if the car turns on. If so then you need a new fuel pump. If not It could also be you ignition coil. - Goodluck

I had a different car where the fuse burned out in the engine compartment. It would not even try to start until I replaced that fuse.
On a 1996 Plymouth Breeze, the crankshaft sensor can be found above the oil filter. It should be accessible without having to remove any other parts.

Check if there is adequate power steering fluid in the reservoir, also check for leaks.

On the side of the transmission. It is called a solenoid pack. To change a shift solenoid you must replace that. Having been in the transmission business for a long time you probably have more wrong than that with that particular transmission.
If for some reason the exhaust is getting real hot ( plugged convertor) and is near the starter this would shorten the life of the starter. I hope this helps you. Mark

This might help you a little bit,I have a 96 Cherokee that dose that, took it to shop still having problem your flywheel may be the problem you starter maybe in a dead spot on your flywheel(Missing a tooth)

I was having problems with the starter and one day it decided to not work made a rrrrr rrrrr noise when I tried to start.The starter was smoking.I switched out the starter and am still getting the same problem. I was told it was an electrical problem and followed the lines and couldnt find anything loose or damaged. Can someone please explain to me whats going on? I searched the internet and apparently this question hasnt been asked.
