take it to a transmission speciallist before you mess it up, atleast if they work on it and mess it up theres a warranty/// probably just an assembly component that remains in the pan after assembly like a dust plug
I'm not a mechanic / technician but another contributor had answered a similar question . He said that the plastic piece found in an automatic transmission fluid pan was used as a plug on the transmission during the manufacturing of the vehicle and was pushed in to the pan when the transmission fluid dipstick was installed ( it also indicates that it is the first time that the transmission pan has been off )
This information can be found in your owner's manual.
If you want to detach it from the gauge in the cluster, then press down on the plastic part where it connects to the ODO. If you're talking the transmission, then there's a cotter pin type thing that holds it into the tranny. I have found if I wiggle the wire enough while pulling on it, it will come loose from the tranny without removing the pin. If you're talking about just replacing the inner cable, then you can go the transmission route. A pair of needle nose pliers will pull the inner cable out from the tranny side.

Depends on how long it's been gathering. All tranny's do this gradually over time. The more it happens in a short period, the greater the chance of mechanical failure. Eventually, all tranny's die from flaking off enough metal.
