There are leds in the needles that no longer make contact. When the temerature changes they might lit up temorarilly.
I 'fixed' mine by putting 3 clusters of four leds in each long needle and 2 clusters of four in the short ones.
When you put four leds in serie you do't need a resistor.
The original leds are hard to remove. Since the weight of new leds is different, callibration with little weights is required.
Other solutions I saw:
-using fluorescent paint and adding a light in the background.
