When I worked for the U.S. Postal Service, I helped to process hundreds of thousands of 'notices' from the Publisher's Clearing House. These 'notices tell people: "You have may have already won 'ten million dollars'". Basically, they are mailed to everyone, but you have to subscribe to the magazines that they publish in order to win. Even though I knew all of this, a few years ago, I applied to the Publisher's Clearing House on the internet, signing up to win the advertized 'ten million dollars'. I couldn't wait for the day that they were to announce the winning numbers. They announced the numbers for the winners of the one, five and ten million dollar prizes. I HAD THE WINNING NUMBERS FOR TEN MILLION DOLLARS. Then, they showed the videos of the winners being notified at their homes. Then, they said that there had been no ten million dollar winners. I was foaming at the mouth when I called to tell them that I had the winning numbers. She told me: 'only the notices that are mailed inwin the prizes' and since I'd applied online, my application didn't count! I asked them why did they give out the numbers over the Internet if the numbers weren't valid. She told me 'that's just the way it's done". I contacted a lawyer, but he told me that they have the right to ignore the applications online because they mailed out so many applications. It was all a total waste of my time, my efforts (literally filling out 100's of forms on the Internet), and my adrenaline. Obviously, someone does win the prize money, just not anyone I've ever known.

Publishers Clearing House is a legitimate company that runs sweepstakes and prize giveaways. However, scammers may send fake letters claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House to deceive people. Always verify the legitimacy of the letter by contacting Publishers Clearing House directly through their official website or phone number.
