The doctors would be wanting to know if the baby is really as small as it seems to be. It is very difficult to tell from the outside. It may show that there is no problem, or it may be able to tell if there is a cause for the growth to be less. There are a multitude of reasons for small growth. This can sometimes be caused by a problem with the placenta, resulting in insufficient nourishment for the baby, but whatever the cause, an ultrasound can be well worth having as so many of the baby's systems can be checked out as well as those on the mothers side. So they are looking to see if firstly there is any problem then, if so, for a cause and lastly, if there is a reason to intervene.

The age is more closely determined in early pregnancy and becomes a little less accurate as the fetus grows but it is still possible to estimate the age of the fetus throughout the pregnancy.
I might be wrong, but I doubt "Little Pony" is mentioned in any of the Doctor Who episodes.
