In most states on her 18th birthday
My ex husband was in an accident and has not paid child support for 27 months. He is now drawing SS benefits which my child just started to receive benefits, his step-child is receiving the other half of the benefits. However, these benefits are less than what he was paying in child support
He's not paying for the right to see his child or for the child's right to see his father. He's paying for the upkeep of the child. Think of the message that will send to the child; If you father can not pay you have no right to see him. If he's not paying you have to go to court. Starting to mess with the custody agreement on your own will just cause trouble.
A minor child should not be living on their own. If the child has been legally emancipated the parent may be excused from paying child support. Otherwise, they will be assessed if the custodial parent files a petition for child support with the court. At that time the fact of the child living on their own can be brought to the attention of the court.A minor child should not be living on their own. You need to contact an attorney or legal aid in your state. Massachusetts just ruled that child support obligations survive death. If the estate has enough money to continue paying the support, the parent cannot disinherit the minor child to stop child support payments after death.
Certainly some evidence of responsibility (ie paying child support, job, time spent with the child) would help your case. Joint custody, however, is not just for the purpose of reducing child support; infact the child support you pay is nowhere near what it costs to raise a child. Consider the ramifications of your sharing custody--what is in the best interests of the child??
In most cases child support stops once the child is 18 years of age or older. It also depends on the agreement you have with the court system. I suggest you find out the details of your agreement and ask a lawyer what your options are about child support since the child is a legal adult now. Just wanted to add that if you are paying in arrears then you will have to pay the support until ALL the back child support is paid off. Just because the child in question is of age, doesnt mean that you don't have to pay, I would recommend going back to your original support ORDER if you know where it is.
Generally, there are no steps. You can just stop paying beginning the month after the child's 18th birthday.

You go to court to have the support order modified. Or you just stop paying it and go to jail. Your choice. It's not your child's fault you got fired, and it's not like they suddenly stop needing to eat. At the very least you should be paying as much of your child support as you can.
If the person paying child support goes to court about it, it's possible. However, it doesn't "just happen", nor is it legal for someone to stop paying child support without a new court order specifically stating so (unless the child reaches the age at which the court order says child support can stop; in that case it's not necessary to go back to court about it).
Women have the same obligation to support their children as men if the child does not reside with them. Parents are responsible for the financial support of their children. For example, the child may reside with the biological father or another relative. In that case, the mother would be responsible for paying child support if the court entered a child support order.
Just because you're a minor doesn't mean you don't have to pay child support! You have to be responsible for the life you helped to create. Next time, remember to buy condoms.
No it doesn't
i know its not against the law for him just to not care about her but if he stops paying child support or other court or state orderd payments to the custodial parent it will then be against the law and you may then take him to domestic court.
of course you still have to pay child support, that child came from YOUR loins. You are responsible for providing for that child, even if you choose not to be in their life. Maybe if you stuck around they wouldn't have dropped out to begin with. Just saying..
