I have a Dell Inspiron computer with operating system Vista Home Premium and I'm having trouble with my CD drive. It will not read most CDs, it will play the music CDs, but when I try to copy data, it says insert CD when a CD is already inserted. I've tried CD-RWs, an auto save photo CDs which I just purchased and they do not work. The drive does not recognize them. A CD has microscopic pits and ridges that a CD drive can read. In order to read these pits, the drive has a laser that fires at the bottom of the CD and detects those pits and ridges. What is the difference between a CD-ROM and a CD-R?

A CD ROM is a standard compact disc containing data to be read by a digital device, such as a CD player or PC CD-ROM drive. A CD-R is a compact disc which data can be recorded, or burned (hence the term "burning cds). Usually, CD-R's are one shot deals meaning they can recorded until they are either filled up (usually 700 MB) or finalized.
