It just means he was using her e mail address to send e mails. Does he have his own e mail address? Or, maybe he was sending notification on something concerning the baby, like the babies birthday or Baptism.
The connection between the parents of a child can feel awkward for the new boyfriend/girlfriend. You have to decide whether you are going to want to put up with the occasional interaction between the two. If you are emotionally immature I would not recommend this type of relationship.
