Use common sense. Keep a close eye on the dog for a day or two and if you sense something wrong or have a gut reaction then take the dog to a vet. If you're unsure what to do altogether, take the dog to a vet. ***************************** My addition to this answer: From what I learned from my dog trainer, hydrogen peroxide can be used to induce vomitting when you know your dog has injested something harmful. Searching the internet for some backup, I came across this site: http://www.dr-dan.com/newpae16.htm. It also lists the Animal Poison Control number 1-800-548-2423. If it's off hours or a long way to the vet, calling the number and using the hydrogen peroxide may be a good, timely option.

You should call your veterinarian and ask for advice specific to your dog. You will need to tell your veterinarian exactly what kind of chocolate your dog ate and how much; your veterinarian will have your dog's weight and medical history on file.

Factors that contribute to an increased likelihood of chocolate intoxication or death include: larger volumes of chocolate consumed, eating dark or baker's chocolate versus milk or white chocolate, smaller dog, previous liver or kidney damage.

When in doubt, take your dog to your veterinarian - your dog's stomach can be purged with activated charcoal or another binding agent to clear out the chocolate and the faster you do this the lower the risks of health problems.

If your dog only eats a little piece of chocolate then it wont be harmed, otherwise take it to the vet. Dogs' digestive systems can't digest some chemicals in chocolate. They don't necessarily die every time, but they do get sick.
Don`t worry...your dog may not fall down dead on the spot. If there was not that much consumed, the animal may just get a belly ache. If there was a lot consumed, you may want to call a vet and ask for sure if the animal should have its stomach pumped. Some dogs have eaten chocolate with out any reaction. People do not know that this human treat can be toxic to dogs. Keep an eye on the animal if you do not take a trip to the vet and look for signs of poisoning. Like throwing up or gagging. Feed some food to the dog to help the chocolate dilute in its system. After a couple of hours if the dog shows no signs of illness, it may be okay.
Call the dog doctor to see how bad the it is. do it as quikly as possible
It is bad for a dog's heart to eat chocolate, no matter if the chocolate is milk or dark. Other bad things for a dog are coffee, onions, and grapes( don't ask why those are bad, i just read that in a magazine. what you want to do is go to a vet to get your dog's stomach pumped if your dog eats a lot. but if your dog eats only like one chocolate chip, you will probably be fine unless your dog is a toy breed or just small, then you also want to go to the vets.

The dog should be induced to vomit because the theobromine in chocolate is toxic to some animals even though it is safe for human consumption.

The dog should then be rushed to the vet because the theobromine and other stimulants in chocolate can induce a fatal arrhythmia in some non-human animals. The dog may or may not need to have its stomach pump, but a vet needs to make that determination.

Here is link to an article that notes the reason's why chocolate is toxic on page three and it notes the other animals for which chocolate is toxic

The stuff that makes regular chocolate dangerous to dogs is found in the same stuff that makes chocolate brown. Unless the dog eats enough to get sick by the sugar and fat content it should be fine.

Once your dog has eaten even a spec of chocolate he or she will want more. If your dog starts twitching, gets really hyper, and and their heart rate quickens you need to take them to the vet.

Imediatly take your dog to the vet. Tell them its an emergency. Only 10% your dog will live. If he's young, there is a strong chance that he will survive.

What if your dog ate chocolate is she going to die?

This depends on how much she ate. If it was quite a small amount, don't worry. If it was not a small amount, take her to a vet because chocolate can affect a dogs heart if enough is eaten. Don't worry, in the hands of a vet the dog should be fine. DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL, DO NOT TAKE MY ADVICE OVER THAT OF A PROFESSIONAL. Consult your vet if you are very worried about your dogs condition.

Your dog weighs 65 pounds is 8 months old has a sensitive stomach and ate one milk chocolate M and M will she be okay?

While chocolate can be toxic in dogs, milk chocolate is less hazardous than dark chocolate and the amount of chocolate in a single M&M is small. Given that and the size of your dog, I think she'll be OK. See the related link. If she starts acting sick, not eating or vomiting, take her to be checked out by the Vet right away.

What happens if a dog eats 3 pieces of chocolate?

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs, so this could be dangerous for the dog. It would depend on what type of chocolate the dog ate. Dark chocolate or chocolate with lots of cocoa in it is the most dangerous, with milk chocolate being less dangerous and white chocolate being the least dangerous. The size of the dog would also affect how dangerous it is, so if a big dog ate 3 pieces of chocolate it might be ok, while it could be very dangerous if a small dog ate 3 pieces of chocolate. The best thing to do is to keep an eye on your dog for 24 hours after he/she ate chocolate and if the dog shows signs of nausea, being wobbly or drinking a lot of water then the dog should be taken to the vet immediately.

What if your dog ate a small chocolate pretzel She weighs sixty five pounds is the chocolate pretzel dangerous?

Will your dog be okay if it ate chocolate?

No surefire answer to that. Depends on the amount of actual cocoa in the chocolate, the size of the dog and how much it ate. Small dog + dark chocolate = likely to be trouble Big dog + milk chocolate = likely to be OK

How long does it take for a dog to die after eating chocolate?

Maybe, because chocolate is poisonous to dogs. When it happens, think of how much chocolate your dog has eaten. If your dog has ate lots of chocolate, your dog needs immediate help. If not much, call your dog's vet for more information. Always call your dog's vet if your dog has ate chocolate (any amount). So, your dog might not die automatically

How much chocolate is enough for my 30 pound dog?

Don't give chocolate to your dog. Chocolate can be poisonous to dogs. And there is no reason to give it to them. If your dog ate a small amount by accident, it's probably all right, but you should still check with your vet. See the link below.

What should I do if your pet ate some chocolate?

call the poison control right away, and in the mean time, try to make ur dogs throw up so that the chocolate will come out of their systems. if ur dog is big, and ate a little amount of chocolate, it's not such a big problem, so it really depends on how big ur dog is and how much chocolate it ate. some dogs have eaten lots of chocolate, and didn't die, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
