From your description, it sounds like it's frozen. The Apple.com website has instruction for getting their devices unfrozen. Use the USB cable to hook it up to your computer, then visit the Apple website for step-by-step instructions. Or let the battery go dead and then plug it up to charge and then turn it back on.
Find the switch at the bottom left hand corner of the iPod and flick it on and off and the iPod's screen will eventually go blank. If this doesn't turn off and is frozen hold the menu button and centre at the same time and hold it for 6-10 seconds. Repeat if this doesn't work.
The iPod nano, is supposed to be used on iTunes. iTunes should recognize it.
