All children are different in their need for breast feeding and suckling. The best advice I can give is to let the child make the decision of when he/she wants to go on to other food sources.

In Itatly, TTBOMK, mothers nurse their babies even up the the age of five.

I have heard of a story where food was scarce and the mother ate the food and then fed all her children by breastfeeding, even if some of then were five and six years old.
