Sometimes an infection can cause such a high white cell count. In that case the count comes after properly treating the infection. If it persists other investigations may be required to find out the cause.

White Blood Cell Count (WBC) normally is 4,300 - 10,800 cells/µL/cu mm. Your child's is almost twice the upper average. He has a infection of some sort and the doctors need to do more tests. There are more than one kind of WBC and they will need to know which is the higher to pinpoint the problem.
