No. His ancestry is American (mother's side) and African (father's side). But Michelle Obama has a cousin who is a famous rabbi in Chicago. His name is Rabbi Capers (Shmuel) Funnyé (pronounced fah-NAY).

Absolutely not. He is also not anti-Israel. There are some internet rumors, spread by his Republican political opponents, that claim he is either anti-Jewish or anti-Israel or both, but his voting record does not support either assertion. (Also, Mr. Obama's wife Michelle has a cousin who is a rabbi, and he has told the media several times that in the many years he has known Barack Obama, he has never encountered any signs of anti-Semitism whatsoever.)

No, he does not, and contrary to unproven claims made by his political opponents, there is no evidence the president is anti-Jewish. In fact, he is very close friends with several rabbis, and two of his closest advisers are Jewish; Michelle Obama's cousin is also a rabbi and has said that the president is very supportive of Jewish beliefs. President Obama has also held two Passover seders at the White House. He has also expressed his opposition to anti-Semitism, and has been very public in his stance against prejudice.

That said, you may be asking a political question: it is widely reported that the president does not get along with the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. Mr. Netanyahu is a hawk and is very aligned with members of the Republican party in America. But other members of the Israeli government acknowledge that President Obama has been a strong friend of Israel and has repeatedly taken stands to help Israel, even if he does not agree with some of Mr. Netanyahu's policies.

No, Barack Obama is a Christian. But he has many Jewish friends and advisers, and Michelle Obama's cousin is a famous rabbi. (Interestingly, in an October 2012 survey cited by the Associated Press, 13% of respondents did think Mr. Obama is Jewish.)

No, he was never Jewish (although interestingly, in a 2012 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, 13% of respondents thought he was!). Mr. Obama was born to a mother who was a non-practicing Christian and to a father who had been a Muslim as a child but left the religion and became an atheist. As a child, Mr. Obama was raised to be spiritual but not religious. He was introduced to Protestant Christianity by his maternal grandparents, who helped raise him. In the late 1980s, when he was dating Michelle and planning to marry her, he decided to re-commit himself to Christianity. But he has never practiced Judaism. However, it should be noted that he is related by marriage to someone Jewish-- Michelle Obama's cousin is a famous rabbi.

Is Obama Muslim because his last name is?

Obama is actually Christian, and his last name is African-- he inherited his name from his father. But a last name doesn't define what religion a person is. For example, Michelle Obama's cousin, Capers Funnyé is Jewish and a rabbi. But his last name does not sound typically Jewish. These days, you just cannot tell by a person's name, since they might be adopted, or have inherited a unique family name from an ancestor.
