Asked by Wiki User

When the boys find out (in the hotel room) Jake tells them...

"There were seven Mc Candles people killed, one crippled, your own brother shot maybe crippled, maybe even dead, and my grandson kidnapped, I ain't gonna pay 'em for that."

Jake re-words what John Thane tells him only minutes before about his grandson they are their to pay the ransom for:

"Now you understand. Anything goes wrong, anything at all, your fault, my fault, nobodys fault, I'm gonna blow your head off. It's as simple as that. No matter what else happens, no matter who else gets killed, I'm gonna blow your head off."

What did Maureen O'Hara whisper into John Wayne's ear at the end of the movie that gave him such a look on his face?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

None of the participants have ever revealed what she said.

Knowing how directors get spontaneous reactions from their actors, it is REASONABLE to assume that John Ford had O'Hara say something raunchy in Wayne's ear in order to get a genuine surprised reaction. But that's just a guess.

Did John Wayne drink a fifth of whiskey per day?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

John Wayne would be the first to admit that he could consume vast quantities of alcohol. But it was not on a daily basis. When he would hang with friends away from the hussle and bussle of film-making they could stay awake for two or three days in a row drinking and playing cards. Yes, he could drink most of his friends under the table, as they say, but it was merely boys being boys. It never seemed to interfere with his work or his personal life.

Did John Wayne ever beat one of his wives?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Of Wayne's three marriages his second was the most tumultuous and probably the one he would have rather kept quiet about. Wayne, never a stranger to alcohol, had married a woman who could and did drink more than he did. She accused him of spousal abuse and even claimed he once threw her shall in the mud. Worse yet, her mother lived with them and the mother drank at least as much as her daughter.

It is probably true there was too much drinking going on. But whether he actually hit her is unknown and probably just gossip. I would imagine had she really been hit police would have been involved. That was never the case. Wayne once made the comment that his second wife was too evil to conceive (they had no children together despite Wayne's obvious fertility). What is true is that this same wife almost shot him when he returned from a night out. She claimed it was mistaken identity, thinking a burglar had broken in. Maybe she did, maybe she didn't. Whatever the truth is we may never know. She died within a year of their divorce. I believe it was alcohol related.
