Canada got its name by mistake. When Jaques Cartier, a French explorer, came to the new world (around where Nova Scotia is today) they met with local Natives who invited them to their 'kanata' or village. The Jesuit priest with Cartier's party (who was supposed to be translating) misunderstood the native's meaning and told Cartier the name of the country was "Kanata" or Canada.
