∙ 14y agoMichigan got it's nickname, "The Wolverine State". around 1835. It happened during a dispute over the Toledo Strip, a small piece of land along the border of Ohio and Michigan. Rumors spread in Ohio about the Michiganians being as vicious and bloodthirsty as wolverines. Later, the dispute became known as the Toledo War.
