The Dell Inspirion 1525 comes with an Sigma Tel Audio chip, integrated into the motherboard. While playing some sort of sound, clicking on the volume in the clock/taskbar area reveals that the volume has a green indicator bar, but there may also be a shadow bar that is much higher.
The reason for this is the Sigma Tel device driver/software has a volume for the headphone jacks and the speaker volume. To adjust/increase the volume on the Dell, you will need to check the following areas:
1. Volume Mixer - This is pretty standard, going back to Windows 98, simply click on the volume icon once and then click the mixer link; or, if this doesn't do anything, just right-click the volume icon and select Open Volume Mixer (I have Rhapsody and find that if it's open and playing, I have to open the mixer, by right-clicking the volume icon).
2. Playback Properties for the Sigma Tel device - This is easily accessed by right-clicking on the volume icon in the clock/taskbar area and selecting Playback Devices. A dialog box will open and you will see tabs for Playback - Recording - Sounds. On the Playback tab, click on the speakers/headphones device (if you have sound playing, you'll see an equalizer-looking volume bar that is moving), next click properties. The Speakers/Headphones Properties box will open and you'll see tabs labled General - Custom - Levels - Enhancements and Advanced. Click on the Levels taband you will notice there is a volume control for speakers and headphones, I have my settings at 100% for the speakers and 50% for headphones. This seems to work out well. You can also try adjusting the settings on the Advanced tab, if you don't like the outcome, you can just click the Restore Defaults button.
Hope this helps and happy listening!!!
Same as any other computer - left-click the speaker icon on the task-bar - and drag the slider to the required volume level.
