It's a base (or alkaline). It has sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) which neutralizes the acids in your stomach. For example, the normal acidity level for a stomach would be between 1.8 - 2 because our stomach's are naturally vary acidic. pH levels fall between 0 and 14. If something is neutral (like water) it would be in the middle of the scale at 7. A base (alkaline) is anything with a number over seven (like chalk), and an acid is anything under 7 (lemon juice, hydrochloric acid). If you consume something that is more basic (a base) it will neutralize the excess acid that your stomach has produced. Some Alka Seltzer has a little aspirin mixed in to aid in suppressing other symptoms that accompany a cold.

In my experience, it usually takes around 30 minutes for you to fully feel that it is working.

the opposite of an acid is a base. Bases are bad to biological things and good to metal. Acids are bad to metals and good to biological things. So you want acids in your stomach
