At the begining of the hunt the members greet each other with howls. These howls warn other packs to steer clear whilst they are hunting.
Then they move through the territory until they find prey. They find and select a particular animal. They move in on it from the opposite way the wind is blowing. This stops the animal from finding their scent, which would then cause the creature to run and the wolves would lose their prey. The wolves quietly move in, sometimes in single file. Soon they will break into chase.
If the wolves manage to catch their prey, they attack the sides, or rump of the animal. They try to weaken it by nipping and biting it. They will avoid the head, since most of the creatures they hunt have horns for such cases. When the animal has been weakened, the wolves will take it down by the throat or snoat.
Wolf hunts can last only a few minutes, or as long as a few hours or more.
Wolves will literally eat an animal alive. I have seen many accounts, photographs and films of singles and packs of wolves cutting the hamstrings on an elk, deer or moose and then disembowling and eating the hams and area around the anus while the poor beast was still breathing and even struggling to stand up. Wolves since being introduced into Montana and Idaho in around 1995 have killed almost all of the moose in Yellowstone park and brought the levels of elk which at one time were around 20,000 down to dangerously low levels of 5000 or less. Contrary to popular belief, wolves are not the cute cuddly little "doggies" portrayed by some. Wolves will kill at least one elk and not eat any of it for every one that they devour. That is a fact that can not be denied. It is often called sport kill. The biologists call it "surplus kill".
If a member of a pack, wolves will work together to bring down prey animals. Lone wolves are scavengers, and stalk prey silently, similar to the cat family.
The grey wolf hunts in a family pack, and co-operates in bringing down quite large prey. An American Bison, who is old or sickly, is a likely target. During the bitter winter, a desperate and hungry pack will even scavenge on carrion (animals that have succumbed to the cold and starvation).

Because if one gets injured, it has its team to protect it. A loner wolf would be dead.
