Darwin was intensively studying evolution during a five year period of time on the Beagle. However, he was studying evolution before and after this journey. No-one's really sure when he started studying his theory.

Darwin waited almost 23 years before publishing his theory of evolution in his book, Origin of Species. His voyage on the Beagle ended when he returned to England in 1836. He had developed his theory of evolution by 1838, but it was after another 20 years, in 1858, that he publicly announced it. His complete book, Origin of Species, was published the next year.

For 40 years, and he got his kids to help during that time too.

His last book was on the worms, published 1881 (he died in 1882) so basically from the time he returned from the Beagle trip right up to his death.

Cool, huh?

On December 27th, 1831, Charles Darwin left on board the HMS Beagle as the naturalist on board. The ship's journey would last nearly five years as it traveled around the world, returning to England in 1836. While on the journey Darwin spent much of his time on land collecting and studies various specimens. Even though he suffered from seasickness during much of the journey, he journaled extensively and would later base much of his theory of the Origin of Species on his observations made during the journey.
