There are 196 countries in the world, although some controversy still exists.

The US government does not recognize Taiwan as an official independent country and considers there are only 195 countries in the world. But it has not agreed to Taiwan's incorporation into China. There are 193 members of the United Nations and that number often gets mistaken for the number of countries in the world.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has 159 member states as of February 2013. The member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are those states which have joined the international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. The IAEA was established as an autonomous organization on 29 July 1957. Though established independently of the United Nations through its own international treaty, the IAEA Statute, the IAEA reports to both the UN General Assembly and Security Council. Refer to the relevant link below for the full list of member states.

*Might or might not include Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and other PRC regions depending on topic.

**The UK is a sovereign (unitary) state led by its own government, the Prime Minister being David Cameron and the monarch Queen Elizabeth II, and is made up of 4 'countries': Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England. While 'countries' is the commonly-used descriptive term, owing to the absence of a formal British constitution and the long and complex history of the formation of the UK, the countries of the UK have no official appellation. As a consequence, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are not formal subdivisions of the United Kingdom.

This is a difficult question. Depending on your source, you could get any number. The most acceptable number is 196. There are 193 states in the United Nations. So what about the other three? The Vatican is officially recognised as a country by most UN members. The Vatican refused a position in the UN because they did not wish to be involved in World politics and chose to serve in a religious capacity instead. Kosovo and Taiwan are two other countries that meet all criteria to be seen as independent countries but are not accepted by all members of the UN. Seeing as the Vatican, Kosovo and Taiwan do meet the criteria as World countries, they are generally considered to be a part of the World's collection of countries.

Here are the list of all the countries:
