There are four stages of sleep, the most important is the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage. It is during REM that the mind reorders itself, the time when we dream. You could sleep for twenty hours a day, but if you never reached REM sleep, or if you were not able to maintain REM for a sufficient amount of time, you would still suffer from sleep deprivation.

At least eight hours sleep is healthy enough but between 8 and 11 hours are good aswell

For adult, its 6-8hrs. And for children its 12hrs.

you should probably get an average of 9-12 hours of sleep a night. if your a child then you need about 10 hours if your an adult then your minimum would be about 9.
