There are a number of rough estimates of the dwarf population worldwide, with the most common estimates ranging between 20,000 and 175,000. The advocacy group Little People of America has over 6,000 members currently. But internationally, there seems to be no exact count of people with dwarfism at this time, although a 2 September 2005 article in the Oakland Tribune, citing unnamed experts, placed the number who live outside the United States at about 150,000.

Please keep in mind that today, the word "midget" is regarded as insulting. The preferred term is "dwarf" (dwarves) or Little Person". Dwarfism is a genetic condition, although sometimes it can be caused by a birth defect. The most common kind of dwarfism is Achondroplasia. And about 1 child in 40,000 has this condition. Midgets are as diverse in "kind" as any normal human being. Technically speaking, there is only one type of midget.
