Audie Murphy is buried in Arlington. He was the "most decorated soldier" of the US in WWII, earning over thirty awards and decorations, including the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross. He became widely known through newspaper coverage of his exploits, and his baby-faced, boyish good looks led to Hollywood offers. He starred in about sixty movies, mostly westerns. He wrote a book about his war experiences, "To Hell and Back", which Universal turned into a movie in 1955, in which he played himself. This was Universal's top-grossing movie of all time, until they released "Jaws" in 1975, by which time the dollar was worth much less than it had been in 1955. Murphy died in a plane crash near Roanoke, Virginia in 1971. Despite all his success he was not a happy person, and probably suffered from post-traumatic stress syndrome, which had not been diagnosed by medical science while he was alive. He sometimes drank too much, gambled, and had to have a loaded pistol under his pillow to sleep. His marriage in the late 40s to a lovely young starlet lasted only a few months.
