Different countries often provide multiple sets of figures, in part because those who were wounded later die of their wounds and their status is then changed. Another variable is that provided for those listed as missing in action. Some will be located as prisoners, some will be confirmed as killed in action, many will never be located.

Some nations will no longer exist after a war and can't report their losses. Body bag counts were not important or reliable during WWI. Men were buried where they died. Trenches collapsed and were filled in. A total of 58,480 US Servicemen are listed as Killed, 189,955 as wounded and 14,290 as missing, presumed dead.

A total of 7,996,888 uniformed servicemen are believed to have been killed in WWI, but almost two million are listed as missing, presumed dead.
