Jamaica uses the Jamaican dollar, which currently (March 2010) trades at about J$87.00 to J$89.00 for US$1.00. A loaf of bread ranges from about J$150.00 to about $210.00 (about US$0.60), and a cooked meal can range from around J$150.00 to over J$300.00 (about US$1.70 to $3.50) in the cheaper restaurants (I have no idea in gourmet places), and around J$2000.00 upwards for Pizza (about US$23.00 upwards). Taxi rides around town are about J$90.00 upwards (about US$1.03) [taxis are usually shared - - for a "'charter" ride, with no sharing of taxis, it is much more costly - agree with the taxi driver ahead of time how much it will cost (a foreign/ non-Jamaican accent usually sends almost ALL prices up)], and bus rides around town are about $70.00 upwards, with rides across the country ranging from J$200.00 to over J$500.00, depending on the exact location/ destination [USE ONLY TAXIS AND BUSES WITH RED "pp" LICENSE PLATES, FOR SAFETY AND LEGALITY]. Rent in Jamaica (at least in Mandeville, Manchester) is cheap IF it is under J$10,000.00 per month for a room (including utilities). Education in Jamaica is cheap compared to the USA (university fees per year are about 1/7 or less of those in the USA), but assistance is much less easy to come by for students needing finances. (I'm a university student, you see..)
. . . For costs for tourists, the Jamaica Tourist Board, your hotel, and your travel agent/ airline will have more information.
The cost to go to Jamaica depends entirely on where a person is traveling from. It can vary from a couple hundred to several thousand.
