German currency from the period 1921-23 was issued by the Weimar Republic and has not been convertible to dollars for many decades.
It has Collector Value Only
The 100,000 German Mark issued in Feb 1 1923, unstamped, should be worth more than a stamped mark. Although the Reichsbanknote 100,000 Sunderttaulend Mark took a dive, there seems to be a strong revival in the interest to acquire these pieces of history. It seems that all of a sudden, people are going ga-ga to get them, and the original 100,000 marks from Feb 1, 1923 are more and more in demand.
History of Large German Notes (Notgeld)Germany's response to devaluation of currency and runaway inflation in the early 1920s was to print more and more cash, until every paper factory was churning out larger and larger denomination bills - exacerbating the problem to the point where the Reichsmark was virtually worthless. For example, in the period between June and October 1923 alone, the Reichsmark fell to less than 1/100,000 of its value at the start of the period! Many of the notes printed were for billions of marks. Many hyperinflation notes simply ended up in drawers because they became worthless within days after being issued. As a result a lot of them are available in barely-used condition. www.sammler.com, a major German collectibles site, quotes retail prices for a circulated bill with that date as €2.50, about $4, and for an uncirculated one, €8, or about $13.
1923 was the peak of hyperinflation in post-WWI Germany, so bills were reissued as purchasing power dropped.
If your bill is dated February 1 (shown in German as 2.1.1923 or 1 Februar 1923) it would retail for about $4 in average condition.
If it's dated July 25 (25.7.1923 or 25 Juli 1923) it would retail for $2 or so.
THE COIN WAS FROM A PERIOD OF MASS INFLATION AND WAS MINTED AS A TEMPORARY MEASURE...
NOT SEEN MANY OF THESE ABOUT IN THE UK OR USA BUT MAYBE THERE ARE LOADS OF THEM IN EASTERN Europe....
VALUE? APPROX £15 - £20 AT A GUESS?
I remember seeing a picture of German Marks being used as confetti at a New York New Years Eve party. I am not sure of the date, around the 20's I think. 1,000,000 Mark bills were used. The value at the time was given at some rediculously low number, something like .0001 cents. Or less. Actually the paper was worth more than the bill printed. There was a picture in my history book that had a guy carrying a wheelbarrow full of money to buy a loaf of bread.
Your bill dates from the hyperinflation period of the Weimar Republic, when prices increased so quickly that bills became almost worthless within a day or two after release. Because so many were printed and they saw so little use they're still common among collectors. I don't have a specific listing for that date but similar bills from August 1923 currently sell for €1.50 - €3, or about US$2-4.
