After the Confederate capture of Fort Sumter, it became a frequent target of Union attempts to "pay back" the South for its takeover of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Perhaps no fort in the US Civil War endured the pressures of being a gateway to the South. By the time the Union was serious about retaking the fort, the Rebels had greatly strengthened the fort that protected Charleston and its harbor. More cannons were added to the fort and all points within the harbor had allot of artillery and fortifications.
For example, when on April 7, 1863, Union warships steamed into the harbor where they passed a number of buoys which the Rebels used as range markers for their artillery. Once the US flotilla was in range the Confederates, with great accuracy fired over 2,000 shots in the two hour battle that ensued. The Union ships managed to return fire with only 154 shots.
This was one episode in the Union's attempt to take over Fort Sumter and the harbor. More agtempts would be tried again.
what makes pearl harbor strong and vulnerable is the protection around it.
A Confederate garrison remained in Charleston South Carolina until they evacuated in February of 1865. The Union had made several attempts in securing this city and its harbor with little success. In 1863, a new Union commander took over the task of taking control of the situation. Brigadier General Quincy A. Gillmore led the new operation. On July 10, 1863, Union troops were landed on the southern tip of Morris Island in the harbor. This unfolded the attempt to take Fort or Battery Wagner, the harbor's main defenses. Under heavy fire the next day they had to retreat to their beginning point. The South's fortifications were strong and two more attempts in July of taking over Battery Wagner failed. Not be be detained in their goal of taking over the harbor, the Union began in August and through September, a series of huge artillery bombardments. Approximately 1,000 shots were taken on the fort reducing it, but failing to force a surrender. The target endured a constant barrage of artillery fire through October to December. Finally in that month they were forced to evacuate the Battery and Morris Island. The Confederate forces still maintained control of Fort Sumter and Charleston, however. Again in the Summer of 1864, another series of even heavier bombardments hit the Fort and the city of Charleston. Still the city held out until February of 1865, when both were evacuated.

Dowels are used for reinforcement of wood joints and are good because they are very easy and quick to use and if done correctly, will provide a strong hold.
The general answer is Conservatives, although after a 9/11 or Pearl Harbor, Liberals have also been known to support a strong military as well.
He looked as though he embodied the Confederate spirit - a planter-aristocrat with a strong sense of feudal obligation, and a respectable record as a Colonel in the Mexican war. As we know, he did not measure up to expectations.
