After the 1st Atomic bombing of Hiroshima on the 6th of Aug, 1945, the 2nd raid scheduled for 11th August had to be preponed by 2days to the 9th owing to bad weather. Kokura an ancient castle town near Honshu which was the secondary target for the Aug,6 Hiroshima Raid and the primary targetfor the 2nd Bombing scheduled for 9th August.
On the day of the raid the town of Kokura was extremely clouded and the air was obscure with fumes due to B-29 bombings nearby the previous day. After scouting the area and fuel running low and commander Maj.Charles Sweeny'sorder to bomb visually and not by radar was another factor for heading to their secondary target Nagasaki. Thus Kokura was lucky to be saved from both the 'Little Boy' and the 'Fat Man'. Another interesting fact for Nagasaki was that the Mitsubushi-Orukami Ordnance Works that produced the Type-91 torpedos used in the sudden attack on Pearl Harbor was destroyed.
