I would try reading, or counting to 300. If you can't sleep, try imagining something, like making a movie, and imagine all the stuff you would try to put in it. For me, the less I think about trying to get to sleep, the faster i can fall asleep. Also, get yourself in a comfterable position. Then count to 300 or 100 for me works just as well. Then, relax your body from your head to toe and imagine your head relaxed, then your neck, and so on. You will be fast asleep in minutes
Sometimes it helps to relax and just think. Some people like to read.

count backwards from 99 and keep doing that. I fall asleep by 200 and i (used to) not be able to fall asleep. If this dose not work for you. Relax ur whole body. First aimagine your toes and so on
In some ways it can be impolite and some way it can't. If you are with your family and are going somewhere you are used to going you don't need fall asleep but if you are going on a long trip with your family then go ahead! If you are with some other people and its a long trip then and you are really really tired then go ahead. I'm pretty sure they won't mind! :)
Well not to drink coffee or watch t.v playing less video games but its personally your own thing for me it's reading a book an hour or before I sleep
