Depending on the amount you ingest it is safe depending on the rust's contents, most rust comes from Iron in the form of iron oxide, if the rust is from another source and/or an impurity then it may well be hazardous depending on its form, from my knowledge Iron Oxide is safe to ingest at its correct given amounts and shouldn't pose a problem as of such, but be careful not all rust is made entirely out of Iron, if you've ingested or are thinking of ingesting rust as an Iron supplement due to deficiency, then my best suggestion is to of course take a safer option by taking other supplements i.e. tablets, injections, food perhaps etc, and if this question was just asked for the basis of knowledge then ill summarize by saying, Rust can be lethal & non lethal depending on its contents, and since most common rust is from Iron then it is not dangerous as long as it is ingested at its needed dose.

Rust is Iron Oxide. Hence, any warnings concerning the ingestion of iron may apply. Ingesting too much iron, whether it be via rust, suppliments, or otherwise, can lead to unpleasant symptoms including nausea and vomiting. Long-term side affects such as liver damage can be associated with excessive iron intake. In extreme cases, iron overdose can be potentially fatal, particularly in young children. Iron overdose is said to be the leading cause of 'accidental poisoning leading to death' in children under six.

Iron, as a mineral, is a dietary requirement for our bodies. We need iron to aid in the manufacturing of red blood cells. Anemia is the lack of iron, or ability to absorb it. In general, under 30mg of iron a day may be considered safe or normal for an adult as a suppliment, but you should always consult with a physician before supplimenting your diet. Just as you might expect with any dietary requirement, moderation is the key. When in doubt, give your doc a shout.

...forget the doc... unless you are on phone call terms with the guy... it'll mean you have to wait, pay, ask and wait again.. Just call poison control and ask for a quick and more accurate answer.

One of the dangers that rust poses is the possibility of getting infected with tetanus. Rust is associated with dirt and certain forms of bacteria. It gets dangerous when rust comes into contact with an open wound. There is risk of getting tetanus, which may be deadly.
