People with carpal tunnel syndrome initially feel numbness and tingling of the hand in the distribution of the median nerve (the thumb, index, middle and part of the fourth fingers). These sensations are often more pronounced at night and can awaken people from sleep. The reason symptoms are worse at night may be related to the flexed-wrist sleeping position and/or fluid accumulating around the wrist and hand while lying flat Carpal tunnel syndrome may be a temporary condition that completely resolves or it can persist and progress.

Visually if it is bad enough you will see atrophy of the muscle in your hand by your thumb area, etc... but there are a few simple tests that may help you, too...1. (Reverse Phalen's Test) put her hands together with fingers straight and pointing up, -you look like you are praying. your elbows are bent to 90 degrees. Hold this position for 1 minute. Then question if you are experiencing any tingling, numbness, zipping pain up your hand, etc... the median nerve is what is effected with carpal tunnel so where ever that nerve travels you would feel those symptoms. the palm side would be thumb and 2.5 of the next fingers in line...and the palm area straight down from that. Another test (Phalen's Test) is almost identical to the last one except your hands are facing down with the backs of your hands touching now. hold for one minute, etc. and the last one to explain is Tinel's test. Place hand palm up and use the other hand to -2 fingers or so... to firmly tap over the tunnel repetitively, if you feel a zing up your hand when doing this that would be a positive result. If you experience positive results on these tests designed for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome then contact your doctor.
