a loose 'lower esophageal sphincter' (LES)

LES is the closure between your stomach and your esophagus. It could be due to a bunch of random reasons like a hernia, a loose diaphragm, or other. If u have gerd, go get it checked out. a third of patients can feel the acid burning their throat and the damage is worse than it feels. They might put u on a proton pump inhibitor like omeprazole (or something else that ends in "eprazole")

GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is the backflow of acidic contents from the stomach into the esophagus. There can be a number of reasons contributing to this. Some of them are as follows:

  1. Overproduction of gastic acid. This can be treated by the use of certain medicines such as antihistamines, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), prostaglandins or antacids.
  2. Decreased mucus secretion. The loss of the protective layer covering the mucosa of the enteric tract allows the acid to exert its detrimental effects on the underlying structures . Such a situation can be treated by using mucosal protective agents like sucralfate and Bismuth subsalicylates
Practices like lying down on the bed soon after a meal and eating too much spicy food may predispose a person to GERD as well.
