King represented one of the 'Big Six' civil rights organizations arranging the March on Washington in 1963. He represented the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. It was called the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The march was intended to bring attention to the dire conditions of blacks in the Southern United States and to bring about legislative changes to their situation. The marchers made specific demands: an end to racial segregation in public schools, prohibition of racial discrimination in employment, protection of civil rights workers from police brutality, a $2 minimum wage for all workers and self-government for Washington, D.C. People from all racial ethnicities attended the event making it the largest gathering of protesters in Washington history. The speech delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. ('I Have a Dream') is regarded as one of the finest speeches in the history of American oratory.
After having been successful in the south, Martin Luther King Junior worked to further spread the Civil Rights Movement. He moved into a poor area in North Lawndale in Chicago in 1966. In general, him and his followers were met with less support and eventually returned to the South.

I can find no record of Nelson Mandela being a role model or inspiration for Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. died in 1968 by an assassins bullet. Nelson Mandela was a convict in prison for sabotage during Martin Luther King Jr's freedom march. He lead the Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). Nelson Mandela was an advocate of armed resistance and Martin Luther King Jr. was a man of peace. It is highly doubtful that Martin Luther King Jr. would look up to Nelson Mandela.
