There are a number of things that your body goes through when you are in shock. You can be weak, confused, have low blood pressure, have a fast heart rate, and your skin might become very cold to the touch.

For whatever reason O2 doesn't profuse to the brain. Generally this happens when there isn't enough blood in the body. In medicine this is called hemostatic hypoperfusion (hemo=blood, static=stopped, hypo=not enough, perfusion=circulating). The simplest way to explain this is the container and pump. Your body is a container and your heart is a pump. If there's not enough blood in the container then the pump doesn't fill all the way. If the pump doesn't fill all the way it can't pump the blood as hard. If it can't pump the blood as hard then the brain doesn't get enough oxygen.

To borrow a saying from a trauma doctor friend of mine, 'Medicine is very simple. The air goes in, the air goes out. The blood goes round and round. All bleeding stops...eventually.'

SHORT ANSWER: Your brain doesn't get enough oxygen.

Shock is a medical term for inadequate blood flow to the organs. Shock can be divided into several different types: hypovolemic (too little blood), cardiogenic (heart isn't pumping enough), spinal shock (the spinal cord is injured or unable to maintain tone within the circulatory system), or Neurogenic shock (from a brain injury). Adults and children manifest shock differently. Adults have decreased blood pressure, poor perfusion in their arms and legs, and changes in mental status. Kids often don't drop their blood pressure, but show signs of cold ankles, cold hands, and white nail beds. Once at a medical facility, medical personnel have many ways of determining shock and the cause.
