This deactivated X chromosome can be seen as a small, dark-staining structure called the Barr body in the cell nucleus.The formation of the Barr body is totally random. This can be seen in female cats that have a color pattern called tortoiseshell and also calico. Only one color is expressed (at random) per cell.
