The most important document of the US government is the Constitution along with the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution was written in 1787 during a convention held at Philadelphia. The Constitution laid down the basic laws needed to administer the US in it's Federal structure with provisions to amend it from time to time as the situation demanded.

On Dec 13, 1952 both the above mentioned documents were placed in helium filled cases enclosed in wooden crates and placed in an armored Marine Corps carrier and escorted in full ceremonial procession to the National Archives.

President Harry S.Truman stated it as a symbolic act, thus enshrining this writ pride for future ages.
