∙ 8y agoThe main difference between a heart attack (myocardial infarction) and a stroke (cerebrovascular accident) is the system of the body affected.
With a heart attack, blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked, often as a result of a narrowing of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. Without blood carrying oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscles, the muscle begins to die (infarct).
With a stroke, the process is somewhat similar, except that a stroke affects the brain. During a stroke, the blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the brain become clogged or burst, which limits the flow of blood and oxygen to parts of the brain. Blood vessels that become clogged are referred to as "ischemic strokes" and blood vessels that rupture are termed "hemorrhagic strokes" (though hemorrhagic are much less common than the former).
