Europa was the daughter of Agenor, the Phoenician king of Tyre. Zeus lusted after her when he saw her picking flowers. Zeus changed himself into a white bull and walked over to Europa. At first he acted tame and allowed Europa to climb on his back. Then he ran over the sea to Crete and there he changed into a man's form and made love to Europa. She had three sons by Zeus. They were King Minos of Crete, King Rhadamanthus of the Cyclades Islands, and, according to some legends, Prince Sarpedon of Lycia. Then she married the king of Crete, who adopted her sons. The sign Taurus the bull is based on this myth.
