the Atlantic Ocean is approximately 41.1 million sq miles (106 million sq km) in surface area without it's surrounding seas. It carriers a volume of approx. 77.64 million square miles. At about 62.427 lb per cubic foot at surface pressure. The weight of saline changes per cu foot based on absolute pressure ie the deeper you go, the more dense one cu foot of water will be so the more it will weigh, i do not have the information to calculate the density of the entire ocean. So at surface density one cu mile of sea water weighs about 4594563274.752 us tons. so i calculate that for the sake of casual conversation the approximate weight of the Atlantic ocean is 356,721,892,651,745,280 tons.

  1. x = total tons on water (total volume) covering Planet Earth
  2. 315 million (total volume) cubic miles of water cover the Earth (estimated)
  3. 4,168,181,825 cubic meters of water are in a cubic mile
  4. 1 cubic meter of water weighs 2,206.07 lbs. or 1.103035 tons (1 ton = 2000 lbs.)
  5. Therefore, 1.103035 tons/cubic meter * 4,168,181,825 cubic meters/cubic mile * 315 million total cubic miles of water on Earth = x
  6. x = 1,448,259,888,391,745,625 tons of water covering Planet Earth, or
  7. (1 trillion = 12 zeros; 1 quadrillion = 15 zeros; 1 quintillion = 18 zeros) *Exb. 1
  8. Therefore, x = 1.4482598884 quintillion tons of water on Planet Earth, or
  9. About 1.5 quintillion tons of total water weight cover Planet Earth

According to Wikipedia, all water on Earth weighs 1.4 X 1021 kilograms. But 2% of that is freshwater, so it's really 1.37 X 1021 kg.

The ocean actually weighs 1.2 quintillion tonnes!? This would basically crush the whole human population if we were under this death trap
