The Pythagorean theoreum figures in the scarecrow segment of the film. this would probably have gone over the heads of the juvenile audience. if one asks the Einstein equation was not used as the novel was written in l900 or thereabouts and Einstein did not come out with relativity until much later- I believe l906.
In both the original 1900 book edition, and the beloved 1939 film version, of The Wizard of Oz, the Wizard is a humbug. Nowhere is this clearer, or better epitomized, than when he purports to give to the Scarecrow the brains that Dorothy Gale's best friend has shown himself to have all along. For the Scarecrow emerges from the ceremony with the observation that the sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side. That statement is never true. What always is true, is the Pythagorean theorem that the square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.
In the way of an example, think of a triangle whose sides measure 9", 16", and 25". The respective square roots are 3", 4", and 5". According to the Scarecrow's observation, adding any two of the square roots gives an answer that exactly equals the third square root. But does 3 + 4 = 5, or 4 + 5 = 3, or 5 + 3 = 4? Then think of a triangle in terms of the Pythagorean theorem. For ease in calculation, make two of the triangle sides 3" and 4"; and the hypotenuse, as the longest side, 5". The respective squares are 9", which is the result of 3" x 3"; 16", which is the result of 4" x 4"; and 25", which is the result of 5" x 5". Does the square [25"] of the hypotenuse equal the sum [9" and 16"] of the other two sides squared? Exactly!
"The sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isoceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side. (He is overjoyed.) Oh joy, rapture, I've got a brain. How can I ever thank you enough?"
Now you have a brain!
