Especially if this is a child under 2 years old, go to the ER! Very young children can see a further increase in temperature over minutes to hours. An infectious process needs to be medically ruled out before simply giving a fever medication at home. If in an adult, we would need to know how long the fever had been observed, as to whether to be seen in the ER. If infection is ruled out, alternating Motrin alternated with Tylenol is the most effective treatment for reducing fever.
